Baseball Wins at Holy Cross by Run-Rule
April 17, 2024 | Baseball
Army moves to 20-16 overall with a league-leading 10-5 Patriot League record.
The Black Knights had a season-high five home runs in the win, with four different players etching themselves into the home run column Wednesday. It's the first time an Army team has hit five home runs in a contest since May 13, 2008 against Sacred Heart.
Starting pitcher Andrew Berg tossed four innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
Braden Golinski homered in the game's third at-bat to get Army on the scoreboard first. Thomas Schreck followed with his first career home run in the second inning, as the sophomore made it 3-0 with a two-run big fly.
The Black Knights answered Holy Cross' second inning tally with a William Parker solo home run, and an Addison Ainsworth sacrifice fly in the third.
Army opened the floodgates with six runs in the fifth. Derek Berg opened the frame with a sacrifice fly before Schreck scored off a fielding error. Parker then poked an RBI single before Sam Ruta launched a three-run homer to make it 11-1.
After Holy Cross added a pair of tallies in the sixth, Golinski doubled in pinch-runner Zac Farrell in the seventh, before Parker had his second home run of the game.
Matthew Ronnebaum threw 1.1 innings in relief before turning the game to Trey Ates, who made the final eight outs Wednesday evening, including four by strikeout.
Army secured the season series win over Holy Cross, after spitting the four-game series April 5-7 at West Point.
By the Numbers
17: The Black Knights' 17 hits were tied for second-most for the team in a single game this year.
5-for-6: Parker was 5-for-6 Wednesday, with two home runs. He is the first Black Knight to have five hits in a game since Kevin Debrule vs. Bucknell May 22 last year. Parker's two-homer game is the 5th for an Army hitter in 2024.
4-for-6: Golinski went 4-for-6 with two doubles and a home run.
Black Knight Notes
Parker has reached base in 34 consecutive games, and 35 of 36 matchups this season.
Brothers RHP Andrew and C Derek Berg were battery mates for the eighth time in 2024, as Andrew Berg received his second start of the season. Derek Berg extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
The 5:00 p.m. game was the Army's second latest in the day this year, with only a 6:00 p.m. start at Georgia State March 9 coming later.
Army improved to 9-2 in Patriot League play when scoring first and 10-0 when scoring three or more runs.

Army begins a regular season-ending 12-game homestand Saturday, with a doubleheader against Bucknell. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
