April 20, 2024 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Baseball split Saturday's doubleheader against the Bucknell Bison at Doubleday Field, securing the season series win over the Pennsylvania program, but failing to win Game 2 of the twin bill and leaving the weekend series up for grabs Sunday.
Army moves to 21-17 overall and 11-6 in the Patriot League.
Derek Berg had three home runs across the twin bill, with Army hitting five total homers on the day.
Game 1
In spite of allowing two solo home runs in the first inning, Justin Lehman settled in and pitched a complete seven-inning game, as Army took the day's opening contest 5-3.
Lehman also hit in the lineup, going 0-for-1 with a walk drawn.
Berg hit his first home run Saturday in the home half of the initial inning, before Coleson Titis would tie the game four at-bats later with a two-out RBI single.
Braden Golinski and William Parker each logged RBIs in the second as Army went ahead 4-2. Parker followed suit in the fourth with a solo home run.
A two-out rally in the fifth inched Bucknell a run closer, but they were left scoreless in the sixth and seventh.
Lehman retired seven straight batters in the third through fifth innings and held the Bison's bottom five batters hitless.
Game 2
Once again in Game 2 Saturday, the Bison struck first with a home run. But despite four unanswered runs late in the game, Army would fall 10-6 to settle for the split.
Bucknell had raced to a 6-0 lead in the fourth before Sam Ruta launched a two-run homer to cut the deficit.
A grand slam in the fifth for the Bison give the visitors an eight-run lead in the nine-inning game, but the Black Knights did not go down quietly.
Berg homered in the bottom of the fifth, before Parker recorded an RBI groundout in the seventh. Lehman singled to bring home a run in the eighth and Berg homered once again in the ninth.
