March 09, 2025 | Hockey
NIAGARA, NY - Army West Point hockey (16-18-2, 14-10-2 Atlantic Hockey America) was propelled by a game-winning overtime goal from Barron Woodring in game three of the AHA Quarterfinals against Niagara (18-16-3, 15-9-2 Atlantic Hockey America) from Dwyer Arena on Sunday night.
With the win, Army advances into the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals for the first time since the 2020-21 campaign and will take on top-seeded Holy Cross in Worcester from March 14-16 in a best-of-three.
Woodring scored just 2:45 into overtime on the power play off a tip in front off a puck delivered from Ben Ivey.
Ben Ivey notched a goal and two assists to lead the Black Knights while Mac Gadowsky continued his incredible scoring pace with two more assists.
Easton Zueger scored a go-ahead goal in the third period for the Black Knights as a late Niagara goal forced the contest into overtime for the second time in the series.
JJ Cataldo made 34 saves in net for the Black Knights to earn the victory.
Niagara found itself net the opening goal in the opening period for the third straight game as Spencer Young notched first of the game at the 11:25 mark.
The Purple Eagles were close to a 2-0 advantage, but Cataldo made a brilliant stick save on NU's Ethan Lund in the closing minutes of the period to keep it a one-goal game at the first intermission.
Army found itself on the penalty kill to begin the second period but the game was turned completely around by a shorthanded break from the Black Knights. Adam Marshall and Nik Hong led the charge with Hong finding a finish in front to tie the game.
The contest looked destined to be tied heading into the second period, until one final possession in the NU zone for Army. The man of the hour all weekend, Mac Gadowsky, slid an inch-perfect pass over to Ben Ivey at the doorstep as the freshman gave Army its first lead of the series with eight seconds remaining in the period.
Protecting a lead for the first time, it did not last long for the Black Knights who conceded the equalizing tally to Jay Ahearn less than three minutes into the final frame.
Army got the game-winning goal from an unlikely source as it was Easton Zueger collecting a defensive zone faceoff win from Ben Ivey into the NU zone and firing a shot from a tough angle which beat Pierce Charleson in net for the home side.
Army had 11 minutes to protect its lead, and did so as Niagara pulled its goaltender with exactly three minutes remaining.
The early move to the empty net paid off for the Purple Eagles as Shane Ott tied the game with 2:04 remaining with a goal on the doorstep.
The two sides went into overtime once again, with Army winning the shots on goal battle 38-35 in regulation.
Army was quickly put onto the power play in the extra frame, and wasted no time after the initial faceoff win Gadowsky fed Ivey who delivered a puck to the stick of Woodring out in front as the sophomore extended Army's season with the overtime winner.
Ivey finished the series with three goals and two assists while Gadowsky logged three goals and three assists.
Army will head to Holy Cross for the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals from March 14-16.
