Baseball Dominant in Doubleheader Sweep at Lafayette
March 21, 2026 | Baseball
Â
Army (10-10, 3-2) secures the series win over Lafayette with one more game to play Sunday in the weekend set.
Â
The Black Knights combined for 21 runs on 20 hits, while drawing 24 free passes including 19 walks Saturday.Â
Â
In Game 2 Saturday, Josiah Overbeek tied the program's single-game record by drawing five walks, tying the mark previously set by Zach Price vs. Maryland in 2011.
Â
Andrew Berg recorded the complete-game in the seven-inning opener of Saturday's twin bill, allowing two runs, striking out six and walking just one. It was the first complete-game of the year by an Army pitcher, as Berg tied his season-high in frames tossed and set a new-season-best in strikeouts. Berg moved to 2-2 on the season with the winning decision.
Â
Kevin Reavey was the star on the mound in the nine-inning second game, tossing a career-high eight innings, his second appearance in a row with a career-high after going 7.1 frames vs. Holy Cross a week ago. Reavey struck out four and allowed only two runs, facing the minimum into the seventh. Reavey—like Berg—improved to 2-2 with the win.
Â
Game 1
Â
Army scored five runs in the second inning on its way to a one-sided daycap win.
Â
The Black Knights batted around in the frame as Jack Quinlan and David Dubrule provided RBI base knocks, before Overbeek walked with the bases loaded and William Parker followed an at bat later with an RBI hit by pitch.Â
Â
Schreck, who opened the inning at the plate, ended the stanza with an RBI single to make it 5-0 despite Parker being tagged out at third on the play.
Â
The Leopards got a run back in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly, but Army counter-responded with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. Dubrule's RBI groundout in the third set up Addison Ainsworth's single later in the frame to score Zac Farrell, before Schreck scored Josiah Overbeek an inning later.Â
Â
The fourth inning ended on a double steal attempt that saw Quinlan tagged out on the basepaths, but with enough time bought on the rundown sequence for Parker to first cross the plate and make it 9-1.
Â
Chris Barr and Parker each walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to stretch Army's lead to 10 runs before Lafayette failed to get more than one across in the bottom half to end the seven-inning opening game Saturday
Â
Game 2
Â
Once again on Saturday, Army left little doubt in Game 2 of the doubleheader, leading by as much as 9-0 in the fifth inning.Â
Â
Barr knocked his second triple in three games in the third inning to open the scoring as Dubrule and Farrell each crossed the plate on the hit.
Â
The real damage came two stanzas later with a seven-run fifth. Schreck walked with the bases loaded before Carter Hewitt and Quinlan followed with RBI hit by pitches. Farrell then drove in a pair with a single to make it 7-0 before Dubrule plated both Farrell and Quinlan on the next at bat.
Â
After the Leopards got a run back in the seventh, Quinlan brought home Schreck in the eighth to make it 10-1 before Lafayette added a run each in the bottom of the eighth and ninth.Â
Â
Mark Abell served as Army's only relief pitcher to appear in the doubleheader, striking out two batters in the ninth.Â
Â
By the Numbers
Â
11: Army's 11 walks in Game 2 Saturday were the most dawn in a single game this season, and the most since taking 11 vs. Lehigh on April 14, 2025.
Â
6-for-9: Dubrule went a combined 6-for-9 over both games Saturday.Â
Â
4: Army had four batters each record at least three combined hits Saturday (Schreck, Quinlan, Dubrule and Farrell).
Â
13-for-24: Army's bottom three in the order went a combined 13-for-24 in the twin bill.
Â
1: Army was forced to use just one inning of relief pitching over the pair of matchups.
Â
Black Knight Notes
Â
Army sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning of the opening game, and not to be outdone in the nightcap, Army's lineup had 13 plate appearances in the fifth inning of that contest, the second-most in a frame this year and the fourth time in 2026 each batter came to the plate in an inning.Â
Â
Berg's seven-inning complete game was the first by an Army pitcher this year.Â
Â
Army committed no errors in a game for the 10th and 11th time this season.
Â
The Black Knights' 11 runs on 10 hits in Game 1 served as the second time in 2026 they had more runs than hits in a game.
