Eighth-Inning Rally Sends Baseball Past UNCG
March 06, 2016 | Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Army West Point baseball team scored twice in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and take the final game of the weekend set from UNC Greensboro on Sunday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Black Knights avoided a five-game losing streak and improved to 3-7 on the year, while UNCG dropped to 8-3.
"It was a big win today and a fun game," head coach Matt Reid said. "Our players were outstanding and they all had a hunger to compete. We were relentless."
Army's pitching limited the Spartans offense to six hits as senior right-handed pitcher Garrison Franklin threw 5.2 innings in a no-decision. Franklin allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Cam Opp gave up one run in 0.2 innings before senior Justin French threw the final 2.2 innings and picked up the win. French allowed one base hit and one walk to improve to 2-0 on the season.
"Franklin was great on the mound and kept an outstanding offensive ball club at bay," Reid added.
Kris Lindner, Justin Reece and Jon Rosoff each had two hits, with Lindner scoring twice, and Reece driving home two. Alex Dickerson, Keegan Vega and John McCarthy contributed one hit and one RBI apiece.
"Reece came up huge and J-Mac was clutch again for us and Dickerson came off the bench with a big hit," Reid continued. "It was a good team win because of how many guys stepped up."
The Spartans' Tripp Shelton went 2-for-3, including a two-run double in the third inning that tied the game at that point. UNC Greensboro took the lead in the fifth (3-2), before Vega's sacrifice fly leveled the score in Army's next trip to the plate.
The Black Knights edged in front again in the seventh when Dickerson doubled home Lindner with a shot to right. The home side bounced back in the bottom half and tied the game at 4-4, before Army's decisive eighth-inning rally.
Army had runners on first and second with two away after Lindner was hit by a pitch. Reece followed with an RBI single to center that scored David Monge, before McCarthy roped a base hit to center to chase home Lindner. The two runs came off Easton Welch, who took the loss.
"Our coaching staff had our guys ready to go and did a great job as well," added Reid. "We need to work on our consistency and we will get back after it this week."
Army's home opener is set for Wednesday, March 9 at 3 p.m., when the Black Knights host Hofstra at Doubleday Field.
Game Notes: Col. Raymond Nelson and his wife were in attendance, as well as former Army baseball player Austin Grimes '09 ... McCarthy extended his hitting streak to six games ... Reece has reached base safely in seven straight contests.
