Army Sweeps Doubleheader at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Army West Point baseball team swept a Patriot League doubleheader at Bucknell here Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-2 in conference play.
The Cadets earned a 4-3, seven-inning victory in the opener before registering a 16-9 win in the nightcap.
Anthony Giachin, Trey Martin, Josh White and Jacob Hurtubise led the Army offense with four hits each on the day. Giachin also accounted for a team-best five runs, while Martin led the Black Knights with three runs batted in.
Army saw Tyler Giovinco and Logan Smith both notch wins on the mound. Giovinco allowed five hits and three runs in 6.0 innings in Game 1, while Smith gave up one hit, one run and one walk in 1.1 innings in Game 2.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Giovinco recorded his team-leading fifth win on the hill.
- Cam Opp and Anthony LoRicco were both credited with saves.
- Army's pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts, while the Bison compiled 14.
- The Black Knights turned three double plays in the twin bill to two for the home side.
- Martin tallied two triples in the nightcap to shift his season number to three.
- The senior also tied sophomore Andre Walden for a team-best three home runs after going yard in the opener.
- Five Black Knights accounted for two or more runs throughout the doubleheader.

How It Happened - Game 1
- Giachin got the scoring started for the Black Knights after the opening half inning following a sacrifice fly. Hurtubise and White tallied back-to-back singles to lead off the game, before Giachin stepped up to bring Hurtubise home from third during the ensuing at bat.
- Army increased its advantage to 2-0 in the fourth when Martin drilled a leadoff home run to left field.
- The Black Knights tacked on two additional runs in the fifth when Blake Ledoux registered a two-out, two-RBI single to center field. His hit scored Giachin and Walden who were both in scoring position at the time.
- Bucknell made things interesting late when they notched three runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh to pull within one at 4-3. Fortunately for Army, Opp came in for relief and recorded the final two outs to secure the win.
How It Happened - Game 2
- Army again jumped in front early in the nightcap when it posted three runs on three hits in the first. Hurtubise, White and Giachin all touched home during the frame.
- Bucknell quickly responded in the second with four runs on three hits to take over the lead at 4-3. Three of those four runs came from the bat of Tyler Wincig when he recorded a two-out, three-RBI home run.
- The Black Knights matched that rally with six additional runs over the next two and a half innings to pull back in front at 9-4. Those six runs came from just four hits with Martin bringing home two runs following his two-RBI triple in the third.
- The Bison cut into the advantage in the bottom of the fifth with nearly back-to-back home runs to pull within 9-7.
- Army's offense continued to tack onto its lead when it notched three more runs on three hits in the top of the sixth. Walden came up with the big two-RBI double during the frame to score two of those three runs.
- The Bison would not go away though, registering a run of their own following a one-out sacrifice fly in the bottom frame.
- Two additional runs for the visitor's though in both the seventh and eighth inning ultimately put the game away.
- Bucknell would get one final run in the ninth after a one-out home run to left field but the deficit proved to be too much.
FACTS & FIGURES
- The Black Knights registered 20 runs on 23 hits throughout the day, while Bucknell compiled 12 runs on 18 hits.
- Both teams were credited with errors in the games with the Cadets earning one and the Bison three.
- Army left 17 runners on base. Bucknell stranded 14.
