Army Splits Twin Bill at Lehigh
March 30, 2024 | Baseball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point Baseball split its doubleheader Saturday at Lehigh, bouncing back from a 2-1 walk-off loss in Game 1 to dispatch the Mountain Hawks 5-0 in the second matchup.
The Black Knight pitching combined for just two runs allowed. Starting pitching allowed a paltry one run over 12.2 innings across both games, coming in the first frame of the opening game.
Army had its first shutout victory of the season in Game 2. The Black Knights are now 13-13 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League.
Game 1
A pitchers' duel finished in the Mountain Hawks' favor in eight innings, in what was extra innings of a scheduled seven-inning affair.
Justin Lehman went seven innings on the mound, striking out four and allowing just one run. He also logged a hit as the DH.
That one run allowed for Lehman came in the first inning off an RBI groundout. Army tied the contest in the third inning, when Chris Barr singled in Derek Berg from second base.
Army's best chance to score late in Game 1 came in the fifth, when Lehman singled to lead off the frame and Barr followed with a walk. A double play however would be the team's undoing in the inning.
Matthew Ronnebaum took the loss, giving up a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Berg led Army offensively in the contest, going 2-for-4 with a double and run.
Game 2
Pitching was the name of the game again in Game 2, at least for the visiting club.
Steven Graver tossed 5.2 scoreless frames, striking out six batters and earning the win. In relief, Trey Ates struck out five over 3.1 innings and took the save.
Thomas Schreck made it 2-0 Army in the fourth inning, with a full count, two-out double to score Lehman and Coleson Titus.
Parker would score Ruta in the fifth, on a fielder's choice. The Black Knights went ahead 4-0 in the sixth, when a Schreck single led to an E6 that scored Ethan Ellis.
Barr followed in the seventh with a solo home run, the sophomore's first in his career.
Schreck led Army offensively in the late contest, going 3-for-4 with a two RBIs.
